“The Frenches bought the two-story Midcentury Modern house in 2003 with plans to remodel it and have it double as an informal gallery for occasional art exhibits. "We don’t have kids,” Janet says. “We have parties.” Wheeler, the designer, envisioned the new space “like a ruin that completes the geometry of the building.” The patio seems like a corner of the house that has dematerialized into an alfresco living room complete with fireplace. Under existing queen palms, the Frenches planted a living screen of banana trees, cycads and cardboard palms mulched with black volcanic rock. Golden Goddess bamboo offers additional privacy.“

Goodbye, front lawn; hello, outdoor living room
“With water supplies dwindling and sustainable design gathering steam, Janet and Larry French of Huntington Beach gazed out at their front lawn and decided to replace it. With what, they didn’t really know. So they hired Culver City designer Adam Wheeler to brainstorm a smart alternative. Wheeler, who worked for Frank Gehry before starting his firm six years ago, recognized the flat, featureless lawn for what it was: wasted space that could be more functional and attractive as an extension of the interiors. "The idea was to create an outdoor living room in the front yard,” Wheeler says. “That was the big gesture.”

Citizen Architect: SXSW 2010 Accepted Film
Snakebit is a 60-minute documentary film on the late architect Samuel Mockbee and the radical educational design/build program known as the Rural Studio that he co-founded deep in poverty-stricken Hale County, Alabama. Mockbee was a celebrated architect, artist and educator who instilled his passion and philosophy in those he believed will become a new generation of ‘citizen architects.’ Snakebit is a rich, probing film that shows how a group of young architects’ empowered by Mockbee’s belief in making the world a better place’ use their ingenuity and compassion to provide housing for people who their profession all too often overlooks.
Guided by interviews with Mockbee, the film follows a twenty-six year-old first-time instructor at the Rural Studio as he leads a group of 20 year-old students in the process of crafting a custom home for their charismatic, destitute client, Jimmie Lee Matthews. Known within the community as Music Man because of his obsessive passion for soul music, Jimmie Lee maintains a healthy zeal for life, blasting R&B from his collection of used stereos and boasting that he 'ain’t never met a stranger!’ His infectious, optimistic attitude despite decades of hard living rubs off on the students as they form a strong bond with him throughout the film.
The film supplements this fly-on-the-wall footage with perspective from Mockbee’s peers and those he has influenced. The dialogue offers both praise and criticism of the Rural Studio approach and presents a larger discussion about education, citizenship and making the world a better place.

Le Projet Triangle / Herzog & de Meuron
Architects Herzog & de Meuron have unveiled their design for a triangular building in the Porte de Versailles area of Paris, France. According to the architects the triangular profile will prevent the structure casting shadows on adjacent buildings, and allow for optimum solar and wind power generation.

By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth’s population will reside in urban centers. Applying the most conservative estimates to current demographic trends, the human population will increase by about 3 billion people during the interim. An estimated 109 hectares of new land (about 20% more land than is represented by the country of Brazil) will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today. At present, throughout the world, over 80% of the land that is suitable for raising crops is in use (sources: FAO and NASA). Historically, some 15% of that has been laid waste by poor management practices. What can be done to avoid this impending disaster?
