Thomas DeVoss AIA LEED is an architect and realtor in Los Angeles with over 20 years of experience, most recently as Senior Design Manager on stadiums and sports venues for Canopy Team. Previous jobs include designing amusement parks for The Hettema Group, running DEAP - an architecture and planning practice - designing commercial sets as a Senior Illustrator in the Art Director’s Guild, and architectural design on civic projects at Gehry Partners, Gensler, and Leo Daly.
At Canopy, Thomas’s work encompassed design, client-contractor coordination, and construction administration on MLB facilities for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Miami Marlins, and Los Angeles Angels, as well as many Minor League Baseball and college facilities. Beyond baseball, projects include reuse plans for a World Cup Stadium in Qatar and renovations to the historic Stamford Bridge for Chelsea in London. Work at Canopy ranged in scale from kiosks, to clubhouse expansions and training facilities, to full masterplans.
Prior to joining Canopy, Thomas ran DeVoss Environmental Architecture and Planning (DEAP). At DEAP, Thomas provided design and project management services for a variety of civic, cultural, and residential projects, including an orphanage complex in Haiti, sustainable master plans in Australia, off-grid residences in the desert, and amusement parks and houses all over the world. Projects include additions and renovations for some of Los Angeles’ most architecturally significant properties, including houses by mid-century masters Smith and Williams, Richard Banta, and H.H. Harris.
Between 2016 and 2019, Mr. DeVoss worked as a Senior Facility Designer / Show Set Associate for The Hettema Group - a theme park design company based in Pasadena - contributing designs to Epic Universe in Orlando and other amusement parks in Florida, South Korea, and the Czech Republic.
Previously, Mr. DeVoss worked as a designer and team leader at Gehry Partners on the Barclays Arena for the Brooklyn Nets, the Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi, and the Atlantis Sentosa Resort proposal in Singapore.
As a licensed California Realtor since 2016, he is a partner at Compass, specializing in sales of architectural and luxury properties. He has represented tens of millions of dollars in sales from Malibu to the High and Low deserts, with special emphasis on the Hollywood Hills, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and San Fernando Valley.
As a member of the Art Directors Guild (Local 800 union), he also provides illustration services including set sketches, 3d models, set design, animations, and renders to the entertainment industry. Commercial clients include Apple, Disney, Universal, Samsung, Microsoft, and Virgin America.
From 2007 to 2009, he worked as a Project Manager at New West Land Company, developing conservation-based land use and inhabitation plans for tens of thousands of acres of Hawaii, Nebraska, Idaho, Colorado, California, and Italy.
Mr. DeVoss’s 20+ years of architectural experience also includes time at the offices of Gensler, EIS Studio, Leo Daly, Adam Wheeler Design, FER studio, and Zapatka Architects.
He received his Masters of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006, where he was awarded the Joe Chole Traveling Fellowship to study the bridges of Iberia and Japan. He earned his Bachelor in Classics from Georgetown University in 2002 and studied abroad at Cornell’s architecture school in Rome.
Mr. DeVoss is the co-author of The Future of Smart Cities and You; Urban Prototyping (2012) and his designs have been published in Innovative Infrastructure; Transit Solutions for Los Angeles (2009), Wall Street Journal (2014 and 2015), Curbed (2014), Mountain Living Magazine (2012), Country Living Magazine (2013), and exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2008).
Mr. DeVoss was born in Bangkok, raised in Los Angeles, and lives in Echo Park, California. He is LEED Certified, AIA licensed in California and Texas, and CalBRE licensed. He spends his free time playing soccer, golfing, mountain biking, gardening, and traveling.
