Aranya (1989, Indore) is a low-cost social housing project designed by Vaastu Shilpa Foundation, Sangath, the atelier of B.V. Doshi. “It is an innovative sites-and-services project, particularly noteworthy for its effort to integrate families within a range of poor-to-modest income” (Aga Khan Jury). The design engages plurality at the level of a) lot size b) street typology c) housing typology and d) flexibility for adaptation and growth.

Plans for Frank Lloyd Wright’s National Insurance Building, 1924, Chicago.
Meant to have been built on North Michigan Ave at Chicago Ave, the glass and copper facade proved to be too expensive for developers. This building is often cited as the greatest FLW structure that was never built.

E’terra Samara is a planned eco resort designed by Farrow Partnership studio that consists of twelve treehouse villas located in Canada’s Bruce Peninsula forest. The unusual suspended design was developed to minimize its footprint on this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

This film tells the story of a South Los Angeles edible garden planted in a surprising spot. Ron Finley, its planter, constructed the garden the way he wishes his neighborhood could be. And his vision of repurposing unused open space, like that of many others working together on urban agriculture in our city, should inspire us all, and remind us of how, with a little creativity of vision, and willingness to get our hands dirty, we can remake spaces defined by asphalt and dead grass into productive places of beauty.
