James Turrell | Roden Crater, East Portal, Skyspace
Turrell purchased the 400,000 year old, 3 km wide crater in 1979 and has been transforming it into a massive naked-eye observatory, designed specifically for the viewing of celestial phenomena. He plans to open the crater for public viewing in 2011.

This man is truly incredible. He built and flew the plane used to survey the land while volcano hunting for this location. A masterpiece shaped by 30 years, 40 million USD, and over a million cubic yards of volcanic material. The result is beyond profound. I fully intend to make the pilgrimage to Arizona in 2011. Roden Crater will become a modern sacred space, “A temple dedicated to light and our perception of it.”
